Week #2 Reflection
Week two has now passed and I can’t believe I am graduating this weekend. What a wild ride. I’d like to reflect on a few moments from this week of fun. I have become homies with some of the freshmen and I’m so glad because I don’t know what other circumstance would bring me close to all of them. They are super fun and truthfully bring me an enormous amount of laughter each class. Mel still takes the cake for that competition and honestly forever will, however, the freshmen aren’t too far behind. Elibet’s relationship with all of them is awesome and you can easily tell how much they all respect her in the classroom which I think is pretty cool. She asserts her dominance but also has a very fun way of teaching and giving feedback to them. I feel as though her teaching style is really reflected in some of the kids in the sense that the majority of them are very outgoing and talkative, but also get their work done on time and still care very much about the tasks at hand. I think that’s the best balance that a student can have and I think Elibet orchestrates that nature in her classes. If I ever were to become a teacher which has truly become more of an interest of mine after these last couple weeks, I would hope to attain the same vibe in my classrooms.
I taught one block by myself on Friday afternoon; a time of day that everyone is a little occupied and minds are elsewhere. I learned how to be patient but also stand my ground with some distracted freshmen. I feel as though I’ve also become really good at giving feedback and multiple kids ask me to look at their work and help them think of ideas for projects assigned. Culture and Conflict is always a good time too and they are nearing the very end with their Banned Book projects. They wrote an article on the Buzz and I really recommend reading it, they’re pretty freaking cool kids. I will benefit from this week’s activities with the plethora of relationships I’ve gained and improved and my ability to communicate as a teacher instead of a friend or additional classmate.
Overall, I’m stoked I did this senior project and I’m very happy about the outcome. Thanks to Elibet and Mel for being the ultimate homies.
Hours done: 48 hours
Remember that when you come back here to teach, you can take over the soccer program too. I think what I see in your reflections of Ellie and Mel is something I've always believed in that the best teaching is when the teacher is authentic. Trying to be something your not in front of a large group is uncomfortable and can lead to you being easily exposed. People - I think - respond best to us being ourselves; holding the line where necessary and giving grace when needed. Looking forward to working with you in a few years when you return to Proctor.
